I got a call from a guy over in Rancho Del Oro, not far from the Sprouts on Thunder Drive. He'd already paid another locksmith to program a replacement key for his 2011 RAV4.
Engine cranked, turned over fine, then died at about two seconds every time. The other guy told him the immobilizer module was faulty and walked away. Left him with a bill and a car that wouldn't start.
He found me and I came out to him.
I sat with it for a few minutes before touching anything. The symptom, crank then immediate stall, is a classic immobilizer rejection pattern on Toyotas from this era. It means the engine management sees the key start the crank sequence but the immobilizer either never confirmed the transponder or confirmed it temporarily and didn't write it to permanent memory. The module was not bad. The previous registration just didn't finish.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the incomplete registration, and ran the full security sequence from scratch with the correct timing. Toyota's immobilizer on this generation has a timed enrollment window that you cannot rush. If you push through it too fast the key appears to register but it's sitting in a temporary state. Next cold start, it's gone.
Once I finished, I had him do a cold start himself. Engine came up, idled clean, no stall. I showed him the confirmation on my screen showing the key stored in permanent memory, not just pending.
He'd already spent money on the first attempt. What I could do was get it right this time and make sure he could see the proof before I left. That confirmation screen matters. It's the difference between a job that's done and a job that was attempted.
