I was out near Royal/Kadota on a Sunday when I got a call from a woman who said she was at a brunch spot in Simi Valley and her 2016 Audi Q3 was sitting dead in the parking lot. She had already called a locksmith the week before. That guy had cut and programmed a new flip key, charged her full price, and left. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, then die. He told her the car had a module problem and stopped returning her calls.
It did not have a module problem.
What it had was an incomplete immobilizer registration from the first attempt. On Audi's system, the key enrollment process involves a PIN-based security handshake with specific timing built in. If you rush a step, use the wrong procedure for the immobilizer generation in that vehicle, or disconnect before the write is confirmed, the system accepts the key data temporarily and then dumps it. The car acts like it almost starts because the transponder gets a partial read, but the immobilizer kills it right after. Classic incomplete write. Cranks, fires, stalls at two seconds.
I connected through the OBD port with my Autel IM608, cleared the corrupted key data left over from the previous attempt, read a fresh PIN directly from the immobilizer module, and ran a clean registration with the correct security sequence and timing. The tool confirmed permanent write before I disconnected anything.
Then I tested the whole fob -- all four buttons, lock, unlock, everything. Clean start, no stall, no warning on the dash.
She was already out money from the first guy. I made sure she was not going to be out money from a second failed attempt. The dealer route would have meant a tow, days of waiting, and a number she didn't want to hear. She got it handled in a parking lot off Royal/Kadota in about forty minutes.
