There is a neighborhood in Simi Valley called Mountclef Ridge where the streets wind up into the hills and most of the driveways are steep enough that a key problem feels twice as inconvenient. I got a call from a guy up there who had already been living with a half-working key for about three weeks before he finally reached out.
His 2018 Audi Q3 would start fine. The transponder was doing its job. But the remote functions had gone completely dead, lock and unlock both, and when he looked at the fob he found the flip blade had developed a wobble. He asked about the dealer as I was packing up. I told him what I usually tell people: the dealer would have ordered a complete new key, made him wait for a parts day, and the bill would have been a good chunk more than what he paid me. He had already bought the shell, so he came out ahead twice.
The car was sitting right there in the driveway the whole time. He never had to leave Mountclef Ridge.
