Out near Rocky Peak Trail in Simi Valley, a marketing consultant at one of the coworking spots flagged me down about her 2017 Audi Q3. She wanted a spare key she could actually carry and use daily, not a drawer backup. Her first question was whether an aftermarket key would feel like the original.
Fair question. I get it a lot on Audis.
I pulled one of my aftermarket NBGFS12A71 blanks and set it next to her OEM fob right on my tailgate. Same HU66 blade profile, same four-button layout, same board footprint, same Megamos AES chip the BCM2 expects. The housing snaps together the same way, the buttons have the same click resistance, and it weighs about the same in your hand. The difference is no four-ring logo stamped on the back.
I used my HU66 Lishi to decode her driver door cylinder for the cut, then ran the chip registration through OBD with my VAG diagnostic setup. The BCM2 on these PQ-platform Q3s is well-supported. Total time on site was maybe 25 minutes, most of that being the cut and test cycle.
She flipped both keys open side by side, tried the lock and unlock on each, started the car twice. Then she just nodded.
The dealer would have taken a day or two and charged a good chunk more. She drove away with two working keys in about the time it takes to get coffee.
