A Euro specialist shop near Moorpark College called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a situation I'd heard before: a 2021 E-Pace that another locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost procedure on, and it hadn't gone well.
Somewhere in the middle of reading the vehicle key module, the process got interrupted. Power issue, wrong adapter, hard to say after the fact. What mattered was the module was in a locked state and the car wouldn't acknowledge any fob at all. The shop had the original customer fob sitting right there and the car acted like it didn't exist.
I pulled in with my bench programming setup. The first step was reading the module to see what state it was actually in, not assuming. The read came back with a partial write, which told me the original data was still mostly intact but the write hadn't completed cleanly. I recovered the original dump, generated a fresh key file, and wrote it correctly this time.
Reinstalled the module, verified communication through the diagnostic port, and enrolled the customer's factory fob. Doors responded, start button responded, all five buttons working.
The shop owner watched the whole thing. He asked what the other locksmith had probably skipped. The honest answer is that you never write to a key module without saving the original read first, and you never start a read without a stable power supply on the vehicle. Those two things together are what turn a two-hour recovery into a ten-minute job.
The car left the bay running that afternoon. The dealer quote the shop had already pulled was sitting on the counter for a lot more than what I charged. Nobody mentioned it again.
