I was parked on Cyclamen Street near College Estates when the call came in. A guy with a 2004 Jaguar X-Type said his only fob had stopped unlocking the car from more than a foot away, and that morning it stopped working entirely. He figured Jaguar meant dealer-only, so he had already called the Jaguar service department and was waiting on a callback.
He hadn't towed it yet, which was good.
I got there and the fob housing had that familiar flex at the hinge. The CR2032 inside wasn't dead on a meter, but the positive clip had spread just enough that under vibration it was losing contact. Classic. Reseated the battery and tested it. Still nothing.
That told me the fob itself needed to be looked at more carefully. Cracked it open on the hood. The circuit board had a small amount of oxidation on one of the solder points near the lock button, likely from a tiny gap in the housing seal. Nothing catastrophic, just enough to cause dropout.
I got him a replacement fob with the correct factory FCC ID and the matching blade profile. Cut the blade on site and ran the programming sequence through my JLR-capable tool. The immobilizer handshake completed on the first attempt. Tested every button, tested start, walked the car.
He mentioned the dealer callback came in while I was wrapping up. He let it go to voicemail.
He saved a good chunk, and he didn't lose the car for two days waiting on a parts order.
