Over in La Conchita, just off the coast highway, a guy had picked up a 2007 Jaguar X-Type from a private seller a few weeks before he called me. Clean car, good deal, one key. The seller had mentioned getting a spare made "shouldn't be a big thing." It was a bigger thing than advertised.
He'd called the Jaguar dealer and got a quote that landed somewhere in the range of several hundred dollars, which was not what he was expecting on top of what he'd already spent buying the car. He found me through a search and asked if Jaguar keys were always that expensive.
I told him dealer pricing on JLR work is real, and the reason is that the tooling for these systems isn't something every shop carries. But my overhead is a van and a set of quality equipment, not a dealership service department.
I met him in his driveway after he got home from work. The X-Type uses a remote-head key from the Ford and Jaguar shared platform period. That fob with the factory ID printed on it, the five-button layout, the CR2032 inside. I had a matching shell and blade blank already in the van.
I read the existing key data, cut the new blade to match the lock profile, and enrolled the new key so both fobs were registered and the original stayed active. Then I walked him through why that second part matters: if the existing key hadn't been present and enrolled alongside the new one, the old key could have been dropped from the system depending on how the job was run.
He ended up with two working keys and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. The one thing I remember him saying was that he didn't realize locksmiths even handled Jaguars. A lot of people don't.
