Over near Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard, I got a call about a 2005 Jaguar X-Type that would crank but not start. The owner said it worked fine that morning, then nothing after lunch.
She had already called the Jaguar dealer. They told her the car had to be towed in, they would need to diagnose the immobilizer, and it could sit for two to three days waiting on parts. She was not thrilled about any of that.
I pulled up and the first thing I noticed was the flip key. The housing was split right along the seam near the pivot pin, held together mostly by habit. I popped it open and the 4D60 glass transponder chip had shifted. It was still in the shell, but not seated where the PATS antenna ring around the ignition barrel could read it consistently.
I moved the internals and the 4D60 chip into a fresh aftermarket shell, part number compatible with the 1X43-15K601-AB, cut a new Tibbe blade on my Condor, and tested. Key turned, PATS authenticated on the first try, engine fired right up. Tested all four buttons on the remote: lock, unlock, trunk, and the headlight flash. All solid.
She kept looking at the old cracked shell on my work mat like it had personally betrayed her. The chip was fine the whole time. The shell just gave out.
