A guy over at Ventura Harbor reached out on a Tuesday morning. He was sitting in the parking lot near the marina, which would have been a nicer situation if his Seltos had actually started. He had one key, which was also the key he had just watched slide off the roof of his car and into a storm drain. He heard it hit the bottom. He was not getting it back.
He called the Kia dealer first. They told him the car needed to come in, that without a working key they could not do anything remotely, and that they were booking about three days out for key work. He asked about a locksmith. The service advisor said, and I am paraphrasing, that smart key programming on a 2023 Seltos really needed to be done at the dealer.
I got to him in about forty minutes. He was standing next to the car with his hands in his pockets watching the water.
I pulled up alongside, got the OBD adapter in, and ran the PIN read on the Seltos immobilizer. Kia's system on this generation requires pulling the vehicle's security PIN before you can register a new key. Once I had that, I cut the emergency insert blade to the vehicle and registered the new 5-button fob. Full enrollment, all buttons tested, clean start.
He was back in the car and had his phone open to lunch spots before I finished packing my bag. The dealer route would have added a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have made the parking lot story a lot longer and a lot less funny in hindsight.
