Up in Matilija Canyon, a Defender owner called about his key acting up. Said it worked fine until he went through a creek crossing, then the passenger door stopped sensing the fob.
When I got there, he had the manual out, trying different things. The key would start the truck, lock and unlock with the buttons, but that passenger door touch sensor was dead. He'd already swapped the battery.
I checked the obvious first. Water drops still visible inside the door handle trim. The capacitive sensor doesn't like moisture. Pulled the handle apart right there on his driveway, dried the connection points, hit it with contact cleaner. These L663 Defenders have sealed handles, but water finds a way.
While it dried, I tested all five buttons on his K0BJXF18A fob, checked the driver's side touch lock, ran through the passive entry at each door. Everything else worked perfect. Just that one wet sensor causing grief.
Twenty minutes later, the passenger door was back to normal. Touch to unlock, touch to lock, no error messages. He was planning to take it to the dealer, wait for parts, probably get told he needed a whole new handle assembly. Instead, we fixed it on site for a fraction of what that would have run him.
