Last week in Ojai Certified Farmers' Market, a Defender owner walked up while I was grabbing produce. His K0BJXF18A fob worked fine yesterday, dead today.
He'd already tried the CR2032 swap. Still nothing. The dash kept flashing "Smart Key Not Found" and the touch unlock was completely dead. He'd pulled the HU101 blade to manually unlock, but the backup start method wasn't working either.
I met him at his Defender twenty minutes later. First thing I noticed: corrosion on the battery contacts inside the fob. Common with these. The moisture seal degrades and Ojai morning fog does the rest. Cleaned the contacts, fresh CR2032, but still dead. The fob's board was toast.
Cut a new HU101 blade on my Xhorse Condor. Then the real work: connecting to the KVM2.5 module through OBD with my Autel IM608. The system wanted the security gateway code first, which I pulled from the BCM. Once in, I deleted all existing keys and added the new K0BJXF18A.
The whole job took 35 minutes in his driveway. Touch unlock worked, remote start fired up, all five buttons tested good. He asked what the dealer wanted for this. I just said he saved a good chunk and avoided their three-week wait for the fob to ship from UK.
