I was parked on Ojai Avenue, wrapping up a different call, when a message came in from someone over in Downtown Ojai. 2022 Land Rover Defender. Key not detected warning on the dash, doors not responding to touch on the driver side handle, and the owner was already bracing for a dealer visit.
He had already done the obvious thing. Fresh CR2032. Still the same warning.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was check whether the passenger handle was picking up the fob. It was. That told me the fob itself was not the problem. The key was communicating fine. The car just was not reading it at the driver door.
I walked him through what I was seeing. The Defender's keyless entry depends on antenna modules built into each door handle assembly. When one handle stops reading the fob, the car throws a general key warning that looks like the whole system is down. It is not. It is one antenna in one handle, and it makes the car look a lot sicker than it is.
We cleared the warning, confirmed the fob was enrolling cleanly with the vehicle security system, and documented which door was the outlier. The fob was fine. The battery was fine. The work he needed was on the handle side, not the key side.
He had already called the dealer before he called me. They wanted him to trailer it in and leave it. He was in Downtown Ojai, not around the corner from a Land Rover service center, and the idea of flatbedding a working truck over one handle sensor did not sit right with him. It should not have.
