Got a call from a guy on the UCSB campus in Santa Barbara. His 2001 Pontiac Montana wouldn't start after someone broke into it overnight and took his keys right out of the center console.
He was panicking about more than the van. He had a research presentation that afternoon and the van had all his materials in the back. Campus police already had a report, but they couldn't make the van start for him. He just kept saying "I need this thing to move."
Here is the thing people don't realize about the Montana. The Passlock II system ties the security signal to the ignition lock cylinder itself, not a chip inside the key. So "erasing old keys" is not really what happens here. The stolen keys were plain mechanical cuts. What I needed to do was relearn the Passlock module through the OBD-II port so the system accepted a new lock cylinder and fresh keys, and the old keys would no longer match the mechanical cuts.
I pulled up, swapped the damaged lock cylinder, cut two new B97 keys on site, and ran the Passlock relearn through my Tech2 scan tool on the BCM. The security light went solid, then off. Engine fired clean.
He grabbed his stuff from the back and half-jogged toward the building. Didn't even close the sliding door all the way. I closed it for him.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes, parked right there on campus. A dealer would have needed a tow and a couple of days.
