Got a call from someone at Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. Their 2005 Pontiac Montana cranked but would not fire. The SECURITY light on the dash was solid, not flashing, just sitting there glowing while the starter spun and nothing caught.
She told me she had been through it before. Last time the dealer kept the van for two days and replaced the entire ignition lock cylinder assembly. That was a year ago.
When I got there she was sitting on the curb next to the van with a bag of groceries slowly warming up. She did not look frustrated anymore. She looked tired of it.
I plugged into the OBD port and pulled the Passlock data. The resistive value from the hall-effect sensor inside the cylinder was drifting, reading outside the learned window. Classic Passlock II failure pattern on these GM vans. The Body Control Module was seeing a mismatch and killing the fuel injectors.
I performed a full Passlock relearn through the diagnostic tool, locked in the new resistance value, and confirmed the BCM accepted it. Key on, engine fired on the first crank. Then I cut her a fresh 5928820 blank so she had a proper spare in her bag.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes at her vehicle. She did not have to call a tow, did not have to leave her groceries, and spent a fraction of what the dealer charged her last time for a two-day ordeal.
