2005 Pontiac Montana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I really need to tow my Montana to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Dealers will tell you to bring the car in because their programmer is in the service bay. A mobile locksmith brings the equipment to you. Towing a vehicle that is otherwise drivable just to get a key made adds time and real money to the job for no reason. We handle the cut and the transponder programming at your location.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We also check the VIN from the dashboard or the door jamb sticker to confirm we are cutting and programming the right key to the right vehicle. That is it. We verify everything on site in a few minutes.

Q: My 2005 Montana starts and then immediately stalls. Could this be a transponder problem?

That specific pattern, cranks fine then dies within a second or two, is a known sign that the immobilizer is not recognizing the key. On these mid-2000s GM vehicles it usually means one of a few things: the transponder chip in the key is damaged, the key was cut by someone who never programmed the chip, or a used key was purchased online and was never cleared from a previous vehicle.

Q: Can I program a second key myself so I have a spare?

On the 2005 Montana there is an onboard relearn procedure that works when you already have one programmed working key in hand. It requires two working keys to complete the sequence on your own, which is the catch most people hit. If you only have one key, you need an OBD programmer to add the second. Either way, getting a spare made before you are ever stranded is worth doing.

2005 Pontiac Montana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked in the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard. He had snapped his only key off in the door lock cylinder. Half the blade was still stuck inside the lock. The other half, with the transponder head attached, was sitting in his palm.

He had already called a dealer. They told him to tow it in, said they were booked out two days, and gave him a number that made him go quiet for a second before he called me.

I pulled up, extracted the broken blade from the cylinder, and confirmed the lock still turned cleanly. Then I cut a new key to the vehicle and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to register the transponder. The whole thing took less than an hour on the curb.

He held up the new key like he was checking if it was real. Turned it. Started right up.

The dealer comparison came up on its own when he mentioned the tow quote alone was already painful. He saved a good chunk just by not having to move the car at all.
