Got a call from over near Promenade Park in Ventura. Guy was loading groceries into his 2005 Vibe when the remote just quit on him. Clicked lock, nothing. Clicked unlock, nothing. He figured the battery died, popped the fob open with a coin, and the CR2032 looked fine. That's when he started worrying it was something bigger.
By the time I pulled up he had already called a dealer. They told him they'd need the car towed in because they couldn't pair a remote without their shop system, and the wait was going to be a few days out. He hadn't towed it yet. Smart move.
I tested his original remote first. The 3-button GQ43VT14T board was putting out signal, but the lock button contact pad had a hairline crack on the circuit trace. The unlock and panic still fired, but lock was dead, and that's the one he always hit first, so to him the whole remote was broken.
I had the right replacement remote in the van. Programmed it right there using the driver-door lock cylinder procedure, which is the on-board method GM kept for the Vibe's remote system. Cycled the ignition, held the lock and unlock on the new fob, waited for the locks to cycle, done. Tested all three buttons from 30 feet away, then confirmed the transponder key still started the engine clean, no security light.
He was back to loading groceries in about fifteen minutes. No tow truck, no dealer wait, no rearranged week.
