Got a call from someone out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura. She had a 2007 Vibe, one key left, and the remote buttons had stopped doing anything. Lock, unlock, trunk, all dead. She figured the whole key was shot.
I pulled up and she handed it over on the hood. Flipped the remote open and the CR2032 looked original. Corroded around the edges, voltage basically gone. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, and the lock and unlock came back right away. Trunk button too.
But she also wanted a spare. Smart move when you're down to one. I cut the TOY43 blade on site to match her working key, then connected to the OBD-II port under the dash. The Vibe runs Toyota's 4D-67 transponder protocol, so the programming goes through the Toyota side of things, not GM. Registered the new chip, synced the remote buttons, and tested everything. Doors locked and unlocked from 30 feet out. Ignition turned over clean on the first try.
The part that got her was how fast it went. She had called the Pontiac dealer first, years ago, and they told her since the brand was discontinued she would need to go through Toyota. Then Toyota quoted a wait for parts and a separate appointment for programming. She spent more time on hold than the whole job took me.
She was back to two working keys in about 25 minutes, standing right there in the parking area.
