A handyman over at Surfers Point in Ventura flagged me down at the home improvement store lot off Thompson. His 2020 Ascent had a replacement key from another locksmith, and it was giving him grief. Worked fine the first eight days. Then by evening, push-to-start would flash "KEY NOT DETECTED" while the morning cold start was still fine.
He thought the car had an electrical issue. It didn't.
I pulled his problem fob apart on the hood. The other locksmith had used a standard ID49 chip instead of the correct Hitag Pro AES variant that the 2020 Ascent requires. Close enough to pass initial registration through the diagnostic port, but Subaru's immobilizer runs a deeper rolling authentication after a number of drive cycles. A near-miss chip will eventually fail that secondary handshake.
Confirmed it with my programmer, reading the chip ID right off the board. Wrong generation. I programmed a new HYQ14AHK with the correct Hitag Pro 128-bit AES transponder, cut the emergency blade from code, and registered it through the OBD port. While I had the fob open, I noticed his CR2032 was reading 2.7 volts, which is low enough to cause intermittent detection range problems on top of everything else. Fresh battery in, full door walk, handle proximity check on all four doors plus the liftgate.
That was months ago. Key still works every time. The difference was the chip inside, not the car.
