Got a call from a guy in the East Ventura neighborhood who was loading up his 2003 Baja for a trip to a boarding facility with his dog. He had already found one of my Subaru videos on YouTube months back and saved my number. Smart move.
His remote fob had been losing range for weeks. He was standing two feet from the truck mashing the lock button and getting nothing. He figured the whole system was going bad. That is a common worry with these older Subarus, where owners start thinking the receiver module on the car side is dying.
I swapped the CR2032 first. Still weak. Popped the fob open and the board inside, marked A269ZUA111, had corroded battery contacts. Green buildup right on the pads. Cleaned the contacts, put in a fresh CR2032, and tested. Lock and unlock both responded clean from about 30 feet out, which is normal range for this fob.
Then I checked his transponder blade key separately. Turned the ignition three times, three clean starts, security light on the dash cycling off each time like it should. The 4D-62 chip was reading fine. His car was never the problem.
He watched the whole thing from the tailgate with his dog half asleep on a blanket in the bed. That open Baja bed turns into a pretty good dog lounge apparently.
The fob just needed a proper cleaning and battery. Took about fifteen minutes, cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted for a new remote assembly.
