Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does the Baja need one?

The key has two jobs. The blade turns the ignition cylinder mechanically, same as any metal key. But there's also a chip inside the plastic head that the vehicle reads every time you turn the key. If the vehicle doesn't get the right signal from that chip, it won't let the engine run. That's the immobilizer doing its job. The 2006 Baja has no fob, no buttons, no battery. It's a single metal key with a chip inside.

Q: My Baja cranks over fine but then dies right away. Could it be the key?

That's actually the classic sign of a transponder issue on this generation. The engine cranks because the mechanical side is fine, but the immobilizer cuts things off almost immediately when it doesn't recognize the key. It feels like a fuel or ignition problem, and a lot of people go chasing those first. A few things can cause it. The chip inside the key head can fail on its own over time.

Q: I only have one key for my Baja and I'm worried about being stranded. Can you cut a spare on site?

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Will it work if I just get it cut?

Cutting it to fit the ignition is only half the job. The blank also needs to have the correct transponder chip inside, and that chip needs to be programmed to your specific vehicle before the car will stay running. A correctly cut key with the wrong chip, or no chip at all, will crank the engine and then kill it. Some blanks sold online don't include any chip. Others include a chip that isn't compatible with this vehicle's immobilizer.

2006 Subaru Baja Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over in the College area of Ventura. She'd locked her spare key inside the house, her daily driver key for the Baja had snapped off in the ignition cylinder, and she had somewhere to be. Not a great morning.

She told me she'd called one place before me, and that guy wanted her to wait two days for a key to ship. I was there in under an hour.

The broken blade was still seated in the cylinder, so I extracted that first. Once the cylinder was clear, I pulled the key code and cut a new blade on site. The transponder in the original key head was intact, so we transferred what we needed and got the new key programmed to the vehicle. She had a working key and a spare before noon.

She mentioned she'd looked up my license before calling, which I appreciate. A lot of people don't, and then they end up with someone who can't actually finish the job. She'd had that happen before with a different car.

My key shell is cracking and the plastic around the head is falling apart. Can you fix it?▼

Yes. The key head on these ages out, especially if the key lives on a heavy ring. The plastic gets brittle and the seam cracks. On a transponder turn key like the 2006 Baja uses, the transponder chip is embedded in the key head, so the fix is to transfer that chip into a new housing. When it's done right, the chip carries over intact and the vehicle still reads it the same way. No reprogramming needed in most cases.
