I got a call from a guy in East Ventura who'd been parking at the Home Depot lot off Telegraph Road. He had a Baja, which already gets double-takes from other car people, and his remote had just stopped locking the doors. Not intermittent. Stopped.
He told me another locksmith had done a key job on it a few weeks before. The key turned fine. Car started. But the remote never really worked right after that, and then it quit entirely.
When I got there I asked him the first question I always ask on these: how many fobs had been programmed to this car over the years. He didn't know. The previous locksmith hadn't told him anything.
I pulled up the programming sequence for the 2004 Baja remote. This generation uses an onboard procedure, no OBD module required, but it does register each fob into a stored count. When I ran through the sequence, the new fob I had with me registered cleanly. His old fob, the one the other locksmith had set up, also came back online once it was properly re-enrolled.
The factory fob ID on his existing unit matched what this car takes. The battery was a CR2032 and it was fine. The problem wasn't the hardware at all. The previous programming had just been done out of sequence, and one of the four remote slots had been used up by a fob that was no longer present, leaving his in a half-registered state.
Took about twenty minutes parked right there in the lot. He tested both fobs on all four doors before I closed up my kit. That was it.
