Got a call from a guy in the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura, standing next to his 2004 Baja in the home improvement store lot. He'd had a key made by another locksmith about eight days earlier. At first it worked fine. Then it started getting picky: would crank and fire in the morning, then refuse to turn over by evening. The security light on the dash would just blink at him.
He thought his car had an electrical gremlin. It didn't.
I pulled out my VVDI2 and read the transponder in his key. The other shop had cloned it with a 4D-60 chip instead of the correct 4D-62. Those two are close enough that a fresh clone can fool the immobilizer initially. But the Subaru security module runs deeper validation cycles over time, and eventually the wrong chip generation fails the handshake. The car cranks, the starter spins, but the ECU kills fuel injection.
Programmed a new key with the right 4D-62 chip, cut to code. Then I opened up his A269ZUA111 remote. The CR2032 inside was reading low, which explained why he had to stand right next to the door for lock and unlock to respond. Swapped the battery and tested range from about 30 feet out. Clean response on both buttons.
He'd been driving around for a week thinking his Baja was dying. It was just the wrong chip inside the key.
