2005 Subaru Baja
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my Baja so it can't start the car anymore?

Yes. When an all-keys-lost procedure is done on this generation of Subaru, the immobilizer is reset and only the keys physically present during that programming session get registered to the vehicle. Any key not presented during the session, whether it was lost, stolen, or just unaccounted for, is wiped from the system and will not start the car. That's the whole point of doing a full reset rather than just cutting a new blade.

Q: My Baja uses a transponder key with no remote. Does that mean I have no keyless entry at all?

Some 2005 Bajas came with a separate keyless entry remote that works independently of the ignition key. The ignition key itself is a transponder key with no buttons, but the factory may have included a standalone remote for door locks depending on trim and how the car was originally equipped. If you've lost that separate remote or never had one, we handle the ignition key side of things.

Q: I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

It depends on what you bought. Aftermarket transponder keys for this era of Subaru vary in quality, and some use chip types that don't enroll cleanly with the immobilizer even when the blade is cut correctly. If the chip inside the aftermarket key isn't compatible, the car will crank and not start, or it will start once and then drop the key from memory. The safest move is to let us supply the key.

Q: How long does a transponder key replacement take on a 2005 Baja, and do I need to be somewhere specific?

I come to you anywhere in the Ventura area, including Downtown Ventura. The job takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes start to finish, depending on whether I'm cutting from a code or decoding the lock directly. The security countdown during transponder enrollment adds a few minutes that can't be skipped. That's not a problem, it's just how this generation of Subaru immobilizer works. A parking lot, a driveway, a street space all work fine.

2005 Subaru Baja Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Main Street in Downtown Ventura when the call came in. Guy had a 2005 Subaru Baja, only key, snapped in the ignition. Not bent, not worn down. Clean break, half of it still seated in the cylinder.

That extraction takes patience. You work slowly so the cylinder doesn't get chewed up in the process. Once the broken piece came out, I decoded the lock and cut a new blade to match. That part went fine.

The part that took longer was the transponder enrollment. The 2005 Baja immobilizer has a timed security countdown built into the learn sequence. You initiate it, and then you wait. You can not rush it. He was standing next to me watching the laptop screen and I could tell he wanted something to happen faster. I told him the countdown was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

When it finished and the car started clean, he looked at the key like he was surprised it was just a regular-looking key. No buttons, no fob, just a black-headed transponder key that turns in a cylinder. He said he expected something more high-tech.

Three starts, engine off between each one, confirmed the transponder was reading consistently. Done on site, no tow, no waiting at a dealer counter.

Subaru Baja Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2005 Subaru Baja?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Subaru dealer quotes on all-keys-lost jobs can be rough, and on an older vehicle like the Baja they sometimes push for module-related work that isn't always warranted. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment handles the immobilizer reset and transponder enrollment on site, at your location, without towing the car anywhere. The price you get on the phone is what you pay.
