Got a call from a guy out in the Saticoy area of Ventura. His 2005 Baja had one key left, and the plastic head was cracked down the side with electrical tape holding it together. He said it worked most days but sometimes he had to wiggle it in the ignition to get the engine to catch. Other times the security light on the cluster would just blink at him and the car would crank forever.
That is a textbook failing 4D-62 chip. The crack let the transponder glass capsule shift just enough to move out of read range for the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. Some days it lined up, some days it didn't.
I decoded his door lock, cut a fresh NSN19 blade, and seated a new 4D-62 chip in the key head. Connected my programmer to the OBD port under the dash, accessed the BIU, and cloned the transponder value so it matched what his immobilizer already recognized. No security countdown on a clone, so the whole thing moved fast.
Then the part I don't skip. Three cold starts in a row, key in, key out, wait, key in again. Watched the security light cycle each time. All three, the light came on briefly and went off within a couple seconds, which means the BIU accepted the chip clean every time.
He turned the taped-up old key over in his hand, looked at the new one, and just said "huh." That was it. Put the old one in his glovebox and drove off.
