Out in Simi Hills, a woman had been driving her 2011 CC on one key for about three months. The spare had gone missing after a move, and she kept telling herself she'd deal with it later. Then "later" showed up when she walked out to her car and the one key she had wouldn't unlock the doors from more than a few feet away. She could still get in and start it, but she was already nervous about being one dead battery away from a bad afternoon.

When I got there, she was waiting in the parking area near her building. I opened the fob first thing. The CR2032 still had voltage, but I swapped it anyway as a baseline before touching anything else. Range came back a little, but not fully, which told me the fob itself needed to be looked at more carefully. The blade mechanism was solid and the shell wasn't cracked, so the internals were the question.
I connected to the OBD port, ran the security access sequence, pulled what I needed, and registered a fresh key. Cut the blade to her vehicle on my machine right there. Tested lock, unlock, and the other two buttons. Started the car three times. Walked to the edge of the lot and tested range. Clean on all counts.
She asked how long it would have taken at the dealer. I told her honestly: a few days minimum, because they often have to order the key and schedule the programming separately. She nodded like that tracked with what she'd already heard.
Total time on site was under 40 minutes. She left with two working keys.
