Got a call one evening from a guy stuck near the Simi Hills Golf Course area in Simi Valley. He played in a touring band, was between shows, and his 2012 Volkswagen CC had quit on him after a gas stop. Key turned, dash lit up, engine cranked but would not fire. The immobilizer light, that little yellow outline of a car with a key inside, stayed solid on the cluster.
He had already tried the VW dealer. Closed. The next closest one was not taking walk-ins until the following afternoon. Soundcheck at the next venue was in five hours, three of those just driving.
I got to him within the hour. Pulled the flip key apart on the hood and the ID48 transponder chip had a hairline crack on the glass capsule. Battery was fine, remote buttons worked, but the Megamos 48 was not talking to the immobilizer module. I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data off the damaged chip before it went completely dead, cloned it onto a fresh ID48 in a new 5K0837202AK shell, and cut the HU66 blade on my mobile unit.
Tested ignition start, cycled all four remote buttons, checked lock and unlock range from about 30 feet out. Everything clean.
He pulled back onto the highway in under an hour. The whole time, he kept his guitar case on the passenger seat like a second person. Never mentioned what band.
