A guy near Rancho Tapo Community Park in Simi Valley flagged me down about his 2015 Volkswagen CC. He wanted a spare, but his real question was whether an aftermarket key would hold up as a daily driver or just sit in a kitchen drawer.
Fair question. I hear it a lot on VW jobs.
His original was the NBG010180T four-button flip key, part number 5K0837202AK. I showed him the aftermarket blank side by side with his OEM. Same HU162T blade profile, same Megamos AES transponder, same board layout, same button feel. The difference is the logo on the housing and the price tag. No VW emblem on the aftermarket shell, and a lot less money.
I cut the blade on site, seated the transponder, and connected through the diagnostic port to register the new key with the immobilizer module (address 05 on the BCM, part 3C0 959 433). The CC confirmed four keys in the system. We walked through every button: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then the start cycle, twice, to make sure the immobilizer handshake was clean.
He flipped the key open and closed a few times, feeling the spring tension. Same snap as OEM. That was the moment he stopped comparing.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap blanks with thin shells and weak roll pins. I batch-test before I stock anything.
