Got a call close to 11pm from a guy near Rocky Peak Trail in Simi Valley. He worked bar and had just closed out his shift. Walked to his 2013 Volkswagen CC in the lot, hit the start button, and got nothing. No crank, no dash greeting, nothing. Just a dark cabin and a dead push-button.
He was alone out there. Dealer closed hours ago, and a tow would just park the car somewhere overnight with still no working key. He needed to drive home and be back for an opening shift in about eight hours.
I pulled up and connected to the OBD port with my ACDP module. Pulled the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster and saw what happened. His vehicle battery had been slowly dying, probably for weeks, and a voltage dip knocked his key pairing out of the cluster memory. The NBG010180T fob was physically fine. The Megamos 48 chip inside it was fine. The car just forgot it existed.
I topped the battery charge enough to stabilize the system voltage, then reprogrammed his flip key back into the cluster through OBD. Car started on the first press.
I told him the real problem was a dying 12V battery, not his fob. He just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel, like he was making sure it was real.
He drove home and made his morning shift.
