An independent mechanic with his own shop near the Ventura Boulevard shopping area in Camarillo had been wrestling with his 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan ignition for weeks. Guy rebuilds transmissions for a living, but ignition wafer work is locksmith territory and he knew it.

The dealer wanted a full cylinder replacement, new key, and IMMO5 programming. Multi-week wait because VW ships pre-cut keys from a central warehouse by VIN. He almost booked it. Then he thought about it a second longer and called me instead.
I pulled up and looked at the cylinder first. The wafers were worn, not the housing. Before touching anything mechanical I connected my ACDP module to read the immobilizer cluster data off the NEC 35XX dashboard MCU as a backup. Then I decoded the lock, swapped out the tired wafers, and cut a fresh blade matched to the repaired cylinder. His flip remote with FCC ID NBGFS93N paired right back up through the OBD port.
I handed him the old wafers so he could see the wear pattern himself. He just nodded and said "yeah, that tracks."
Ignition turns smooth now, key slides in clean. Even a mechanic called a locksmith for this one because ignition internals are a different skill set entirely.
