Got a call around 10 PM from a vet assistant finishing a late shift at a clinic near North Ranch Open Space in Thousand Oaks. Her 2020 Tiguan's flip key would not turn in the ignition. Blade went in, but then nothing. Dead stop.
She tried wiggling it, pulling it out, reinserting. Same thing. She thought the key had died.
I was there before 11. First thing I did was connect my Smart Pro through the OBD port and pull the immobilizer status. Immo5 side was healthy, chip was still learned to the comfort module (5Q0 959 435 board). No fault codes stored. So the transponder was fine and the problem was mechanical.
Pulled the HU66 cylinder and found a jammed wafer, the kind of thing that happens when an original blade wears thin and starts riding the wafers at a slight angle over thousands of insertions. Freed the stuck wafer, cleaned the rest, and decoded the full bitting. Cut her a fresh HU66 blade right on the van and seated it in the original flip key housing so she kept her existing transponder chip pairing.
Key turned smooth. Ignition, doors, trunk, all good. She drove home about 40 minutes after I pulled up.
The dealer was closed and wouldn't have had a slot for days. She would have left her Tiguan in a dark parking lot overnight. Instead she left in it.
