I got a call from a woman over in Nestor who had a 1999 Venture sitting in her driveway. She had one working key left. The van would crank, fire up for about two seconds, then die. Security light was on solid. She thought it was the fuel pump.

It was not the fuel pump.

I pulled up and she was standing next to the van with the hood already propped, bless her heart. I asked her to put that down. This one lives in the ignition cylinder.

The van was running the older GM resistor-pellet security setup, and the contacts inside the ignition cylinder were worn enough that the system was reading the key's value inconsistently. Sometimes it would pass. Sometimes it would not. The two-second start-and-stall is the classic tell on this generation. The engine lights off, the security system says "hold on," and it kills the fuel.

I tried the onboard relearn first, because on a van this age that sometimes buys you time or confirms the cylinder is the problem. It confirmed the cylinder was the problem. The resistor contacts inside were reading the key correctly about half the time.

Cut a fresh key to match the vehicle, verified the transponder was enrolling cleanly, checked the security light behavior on three separate cold starts. Then I walked her through what to watch for if the cylinder starts acting up again down the road, because worn contacts on this generation can get worse before the owner notices a pattern.

She had been quoted a long wait and a number she did not like at the dealer. I was done in her driveway in Nestor in under an hour, and she drove to pick up her kids right after.
