I was out in Bressi Ranch on a Tuesday morning, and the call was about a Venture that would start fine some days and strand the owner other days. She had already been to a shop. Already paid for a new key.
The engine would crank, fire for a second or two, then die. No warning, no hesitation, just gone. She described it as the van "changing its mind." She had been borrowing her neighbor's car to do school pickups.
When a key passes the initial learn but starts failing across drive cycles on these vans, the first thing I want to know is what blank was used and whether it was actually enrolled or just cut. The previous key had been cut correctly. The blade profile was right. But the transponder inside it was the wrong type for this application. A close match, not a correct match. That kind of mistake passes the very first start sometimes, because the system is doing a shallow read. Then it does a deeper verification on subsequent starts and starts rejecting it.
I read the existing key with my programmer, confirmed the mismatch, and enrolled a new key with the correct transponder type to her van. Took about 25 minutes total, including cutting and testing three cold starts back to back.
She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her a good chunk more, and they would have wanted the van towed in. She just nodded. She was already thinking about her neighbor she needed to call to say she didn't need a ride anymore.
