2001 Chevrolet Venture
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Chevrolet Venture Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Buena Creek, Vista. His 2001 Chevrolet Venture had been sitting for about a week while he sorted out some work.

When he went to leave, the van would crank, catch, run for maybe two seconds, then die. Over and over. He assumed it was a fuel issue, maybe a dying fuel pump, and he'd already priced out a pump at the parts store.

I asked him one question before I drove out: does the security light stay on or flash after it stalls. He checked. Flashing. That narrowed it down fast.

When I got there, I looked at the key. The plastic head was cracked pretty badly around the base, and the transponder inside had shifted. Not broken, just loose enough that the read was inconsistent. The ignition cylinder was picking it up some of the time, not others. On a cold start with everything still, it might work. Move the key at all and the signal dropped.

I cut a new key blade to match his existing cuts, transferred the chip carefully, and we ran the relearn right there in his driveway. Van started clean on the first try.

He'd already mentally committed to a fuel pump job. The actual fix was a key. He mentioned the dealer, I told him they would have needed to confirm the theft system issue first anyway, then order parts. He saved time and a good chunk of money. Mostly he saved time.
