If the original blade is worn or damaged, this is the right time to cut a fresh one and make sure you are not carrying forward a worn key that will eventually give the ignition cylinder trouble. If you have no spare, or if both keys trigger the same warning, there is an onboard relearn you can try on these older GM vans. Turn the key to the ON position without cranking the engine. Watch the security light on the dash. Leave it there for about ten minutes until the light goes out or stops flashing. Turn the key off, wait a few seconds, then try to start normally. This can reset the system after a glitch.

If the van still will not start after that, or if this warning keeps coming back intermittently, the causes go beyond just the key. A worn ignition cylinder that is not reading the chip consistently, a failing chip inside the key head, or a deeper issue with the security module are all possibilities. That is when you need a tech on site with diagnostic equipment to read what the system is actually seeing.

I bought a replacement key online. Can I program it myself at home?

It depends on whether you still have a working key for the van.

If you have one working key already, these older GM vans do support an onboard add-a-key procedure using the ignition. You use the working key to put the vehicle into a programming mode, then present the new key to enroll it. No external tool required. The catch is you need that one working key to kick off the process.

If you have no working key at all, the onboard method will not work. You need diagnostic equipment to access the security system and enroll the new key from scratch. That is an all-keys-lost situation, and it is a job for a tech with the right tools.

Either way, the key you bought online still needs to be cut to your specific vehicle before any of this matters.

My Venture cranks but dies immediately every time. The key feels fine. What is going on?

On these vans it usually comes down to one of three things: the chip inside the key head has degraded over twenty-plus years of use, the ignition cylinder antenna ring that reads the chip is failing, or the key and security system have gotten out of sync somehow.

I can read what the security system is seeing through the OBD port and tell you whether the fault is in the key, the antenna, or the module itself before anything gets replaced.
