A guy had been parked at a pull-off near De Luz for most of the morning. At some point he realized his key wasn't in his pocket, wasn't in the center console, wasn't anywhere. The 2001 Explorer wasn't going anywhere either.
He had one bar of signal and used it to text me a pin. I already had blanks and equipment for this generation of Explorer, so I loaded up and drove out.
When I got there he was sitting on the tailgate in the sun. The key he'd lost was a remote head key, three buttons, with the factory fob ID printed right on the back. I decoded the door lock, cut a replacement blade to match, and programmed the fob to the vehicle's immobilizer on site. The immobilizer on this generation has that timed security delay baked in, so there's a few minutes where you're just watching a counter, but that's normal. It's not stalling, it's just how the system works.
Car started. Fob locked and unlocked. He drove out of that pull-off the same way he'd driven in.
He mentioned the dealer option almost as an aside, mostly because he'd already done the math on a tow plus the wait. Mobile meant none of that.
