2001 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Ford's PATS system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. PATS stands for Passive Anti-Theft System. Every Ford key since the early 2000s has a tiny transponder chip embedded in the head. When you turn the ignition or press start, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip answers with the right code, the car starts. If not, nothing happens. That's why you can't just copy a Ford key at the hardware store.
A customer at the grocery store near De Luz thought only the dealer could program that chip. She had a 2001 Ford Explorer and needed a spare. The dealer quoted her $395 and she assumed that was her only option because of the "computer stuff" involved. Her neighbor had used me before and passed along my number.
I brought my Smart Pro to her car and walked through the PATS security sequence. Her Explorer uses an 80-bit 4D63 chip, which is Ford's main transponder chip across most of the 2010s lineup. The technology inside the key is real, but the dealer markup on programming through that technology isn't justified when a mobile locksmith carries the same tools.
Her spare was cut, programmed, and tested in about 30 minutes. Total was around $185. She seemed relieved when I told her the "computer stuff" was just a 30-minute process at her car.

“The dealership quoted me $600 for a new Honda key. EZ Car Keyz did it for $225, same day, cut and programmed at my house. Works perfectly. Everyone should know this is an option.”
“A+ service at an even better price. Tim was a lifesaver. I lost my original and only key for my Audi and he was willing to come to my location at 8pm the same day. He worked fast, communicated clearly, and made sure everything worked before leaving.”
“I called over 40 locksmiths trying to get a key made for my Audi A6 and nobody could do it. Tim made it easy, fast, and affordable. He showed up with a smile and got the job done without any stress. Absolute wizard with keys.”
