She was at a restaurant near the CSUSM area in San Marcos when someone grabbed her purse off the back of her chair. Car keys, house keys, wallet, phone, gone. She borrowed the hostess's phone, called the police, then her husband, then me.
Her 2026 Ford Explorer was sitting in the lot with no keys at all. Her husband had already called the dealer. The dealer's answer was to tow it in, wait three to five business days for a key to be ordered, and they recommended the stolen fob be invalidated since it could still physically enter the vehicle. The estimate they gave him covered just the key work, and it was not a small number.

I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, cleared the old key data out of the system, and programmed two new fobs. Cut the emergency blade for each. Tested every function on both before I packed up.
She drove home that night. The stolen fob can still slide into a door lock physically, but the immobilizer will not allow the engine to start. She had two working keys and the old one was dead to the car before she even finished the police report.
The dealer comparison was an afterthought. She just wanted to go home.
