What exactly is a smart key and why does my 2011 Explorer need it programmed?

If range stays short after that, the fob itself may have taken some damage, usually from being dropped or getting wet. The internal antenna can crack in a way that isn't visible from outside. That's when you're looking at a replacement fob rather than a battery fix.

One thing worth checking either way: the emergency insert blade inside the fob. Owners who don't know it's there sometimes pry the fob apart wrong trying to change the battery, and that can bend the battery contact just enough to cause intermittent problems that look like range issues.
