I got a call from a guy parked at a gas station near Downtown Lemon Grove. He was passing through on a road trip and his 2011 Ford Explorer just sat there. Fob in hand, push-button doing nothing, a key-not-detected warning staring back at him from the dash. He'd already swapped the fob battery at the gas station counter. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, I could see the stress on his face. Road trip, middle of the day, nowhere near home.
I started at the fob itself. The replacement CR2032 from the gas station rack was seated slightly crooked and one of the battery contacts had a tiny outward bow to it, probably from whoever pried it open in the parking lot. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery correctly, and checked the emergency insert blade while I had it apart. That blade is what you fall back on if the fob ever goes completely dark, and a lot of owners don't even know it's in there.
That fixed the remote functions, but the push-button start was still throwing the warning. That told me the immobilizer side hadn't re-paired cleanly after the battery drop. I ran the programming sequence with my diagnostic tool, confirmed the key was registered, and walked through every button and both door handles before I called it done.
He was back on the highway in about forty minutes from when he called. The dealer conversation never really came up. He just wanted to get moving, and we got him moving.
