🔧 PRO TIP
The 2007 Explorer runs Ford's passive anti-theft system with a transponder chip built into the remote head key. The fob and the blade are one unit here -- you can't just swap a remote housing and call it done, because the chip inside the head still has to be paired to the vehicle. The good news: if you have two working keys in hand, there's an onboard add-a-key sequence you can run yourself right at the ignition cylinder. No scan tool needed for that case. All-keys-lost is a different story and needs a programmer on site. The fob takes a CR2032 -- swap it before anything else if your remote range suddenly dropped or the lock and unlock buttons got flaky. A dead battery in the head won't kill the transponder start, but it'll make you think the fob is failing when it's just thirsty.

2007 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

South Oceanside, on a weekday afternoon. The guy called me from an underground parking structure below his condo complex. Second level down, low concrete ceiling, tight spiral ramp. He had one remote head key left and the fob side had stopped working. The blade still started the car, but the power locks were manual and the panic button was dead, which in an underground garage felt worse than it sounds.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to bring the car in. He asked if they could come to him. They said no.

I parked on the street above and walked my bag down the ramp. The lighting was rough and I had a flashlight clipped to my shirt the whole time. First thing I did was pop the battery cover on the fob and check the CR2032. It read low but not dead -- enough to cause exactly this kind of partial failure where the remote functions drop out before the transponder does.

Fresh battery, retest. Lock and unlock came back. Panic came back. I cycled it a few times to make sure it was consistent and not just a fluke reading.

Then I cut and programmed a second key on site, because if one key is already acting up, the last thing this guy needed was to be stranded down there on a future afternoon with zero working keys. With the existing key present, the onboard sequence handled the registration without a countdown fight.

He drove out about 35 minutes after I walked down that ramp. The dealer route would have required towing the car up and out first, then waiting for an appointment. He saved a good chunk and never had to move the car until he wanted to.

Ford Explorer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key made after hours or on the weekend?
Call us. Ford dealers run limited Saturday hours at best, and most are completely closed Sunday. If your only key stops working on a Friday evening in South Oceanside, the dealer cannot touch it until Monday morning at the earliest -- and that assumes the correct blank is in stock and they can squeeze you into the schedule. Owners on Ford forums report waits of several days even during normal business hours when parts need to be ordered. We work nights and weekends, because that's exactly when most people figure out they have a key problem.
How long does programming actually take once you're at my car?
Can you get it done faster than the dealer?
I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2007 Explorer?
My 2007 Explorer starts fine but stalls out about two seconds after the engine fires. Is that the key?
