2002 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the pier end of Downtown IB when the call came in. A woman had a 2002 Ford Explorer sitting in a lot off Palm Avenue. Her only key had a cracked shell, the buttons were intermittent, and she was convinced she needed to go to the dealer.

She had already called the dealer. They needed the car dropped off, said the correct blank had to be ordered by VIN, and gave her a window of several days before the job could even be scheduled. She had work the next morning.

I drove to her. The Explorer was sitting right there in the lot, engine off, sun already doing its thing.

I verified the fob matched the factory FCC ID on her original key, pulled the correct replacement shell and blade blank from my kit, cut the blade to her vehicle, and went to work through the OBD port with my programmer. The 2002 Explorer uses a transponder-based immobilizer that requires the new chip to be enrolled before the engine will run. That enrollment process is not dealer-exclusive. It has not been for a long time. My equipment handles it the same way.

I programmed the new remote head key, tested every button, verified the engine started and stayed running, and checked the original key still worked in case she wanted to keep it as a backup.

She was back on her phone before I had packed up my bag. The dealer comparison came up on its own when she asked what the total was. She just said "seriously?" and that was the end of it.
