I got a call from a mechanic shop in Downtown National City. Not a customer calling about their own car - a shop calling about a customer's car that had already become someone else's problem.
Another locksmith had started a smart key replacement on a 2012 Explorer. Somewhere during the programming sequence the car battery dropped voltage. The security pairing didn't finish cleanly, and the body control module ended up in a lockout state. The other tech packed up and left. The shop was now sitting on a vehicle that wouldn't accept a key and an owner who was being told he needed a flatbed and a dealer.

I spent a few minutes with the shop guys explaining what had happened and why battery voltage matters so much on this generation before you ever open a security session.
