The remote buttons are a separate system; the fob can be dead and the car will still start fine. But a key with a blank or unprogrammed chip will not start the car no matter how well it's cut.

So when I make a replacement, there are two distinct steps: cutting the blade to your lock, and programming the chip. The fob pairing is a third step if you want the buttons working. All three get handled on site.

Three bottlenecks, same as always.

First, parts availability. A 2005 Explorer isn't a current model, so the correct remote head key blank may not be stocked at the counter. Dealers often have to order by VIN, and shipping adds days.

A few things cause this: a transponder that has lost its programming over time, a damaged chip inside the key head, or a failing antenna ring around the ignition cylinder that can't read the chip cleanly. The antenna ring on Explorers of this generation is a documented weak point -- it sits right at the ignition column and can crack or lose continuity with age.

Dashboard behavior during this: the security light may stay solid or flash after the stall rather than going off as it normally would once the key is validated. That light pattern is a useful diagnostic clue.

The remote buttons on my key stopped working but the car still starts fine. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. The remote side and the transponder side of a remote head key are independent. If the car starts, the chip is good.

First thing to check: the CR2032 battery. On the 2005 Explorer fob, a weak battery doesn't always kill the remote completely -- it often just cuts range down to a few feet before it quits entirely. Swap the battery before assuming anything else is wrong.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, the fob itself may have lost its pairing to the vehicle. That can happen after a battery goes fully dead or after certain electrical events. Re-syncing the remote is a separate process from the transponder programming and is usually quick.

If the fob casing is cracked or a button pad is worn through, I can sometimes transfer the working electronics into a new shell. Either way, you don't automatically need a full replacement key just because the buttons quit.
