2005 Ford Explorer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2005 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A man near Encanto Border called me about his 2005 Explorer. He used a walker, and the idea of getting himself to a Ford dealer wasn't just inconvenient -- it was genuinely not possible that week. His son was out of state. His one key was getting flaky on the remote side and he wanted a spare made before it gave out completely.

I drove out to his place that morning and set up in the driveway.

The Explorer takes a remote head key, so there's both a transponder component and the three-button fob built into the same unit. I decoded the key blade from the lock, cut a fresh key to match, then handled the transponder enrollment through the OBD port. The fob pairing came after. While I had him there, I walked him through checking the battery in his existing remote -- it's a CR2032 and they go quietly, no warning, until range drops to about two feet.

He didn't have to call his son, arrange a ride, or sit in a service waiting room. Both keys were done before lunch, right there in the driveway. The dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause, and that was before factoring in how he'd even get there. He saved a good chunk and never left home.
