2008 Ford Explorer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does it need programming?

A remote head key is a single unit where the key blade and the fob are one piece. There's no separate remote. Inside the key is a transponder chip that sends a coded signal to the vehicle's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. If the code doesn't match what the system expects, the engine won't run, or it starts and immediately stalls. The remote buttons for lock and unlock are a separate function layered on top of that.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a 2008 Explorer key?

For this generation Explorer, I carry professional automotive key programming equipment that handles Ford immobilizer functions directly. On an add-a-key job where a working key is present, the onboard relearn sequence does the heavy lifting and the tool handles the remote pairing side. On an all-keys-lost job, I need a programmer that can communicate through the diagnostic port to register new keys from scratch.

Q: My 2008 Explorer starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The transponder and the remote are independent functions in the same housing. If the car starts, the transponder is doing its job. Dead remote buttons on this key are almost always the CR2032 battery. Swap it, make sure the contacts inside the shell aren't corroded, and retest. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the buttons back, the fob may need to be re-paired to the vehicle, which is a quick procedure.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home, or do I need a locksmith?

On a 2008 Explorer with at least one working key in hand, there is an onboard procedure that can program the transponder chip in a new key without any external tool. It takes two working programmed keys to trigger it. So if you already have two keys and want a third, you can potentially do it yourself with the right blank and the correct sequence.

2008 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Brown Field Area of Otay Mesa, I got a call from a guy whose Explorer was sitting in a parking lot near the airfield. His only key had a cracked shell and the buttons were getting flaky. He wasn't locked out, but he was smart enough to know he didn't want to find out what happened if that key finally gave up.

He texted me his VIN before I left. That's the move. With the VIN in hand I already knew the key configuration, had the right blank pulled, and had the fob shell and a fresh CR2032 ready before I even merged onto the freeway.

When I got there, he had his ID out and the working key sitting on the hood. I decoded the blade, cut the new key, transferred the transponder programming while his original key was still functional, and got the remote paired. Then I did what I always do: tested the new key in the ignition, walked all three buttons, and locked him out with the new key to confirm the door cylinder matched. Everything worked clean.

He asked about the dealer on the way out. I told him to call and find out. He already knew the answer from my quote. He pocketed the new key and drove off before I finished writing the invoice.

Ford Explorer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, look up the business name on Google and Yelp and make sure the address and phone number are consistent. Scam operations use call-center numbers that don't match any real local listing, and they evaporate after complaints. Second, ask for a firm out-the-door price over the phone for your specific year and model. A real locksmith will ask for your year, make, and model and give you a number.
