A project manager in Fernbrook had a Tuesday morning full of back-to-back meetings at his office and zero flexibility to deal with a car problem. His 2016 Explorer fob had started acting up after he swapped the batteries himself over the weekend. He seated the new cells, clicked the fob, and the car just sat there. He tried again the next morning. Nothing. He figured he'd done something wrong, tried a third set of cells from a different pack, and still got a key-not-detected warning on the dash when he walked up to the door.
He called me before 8am. I told him to stay at his office and I'd come to him.
When I got to the lot, I checked the fob first. Both CR2025 cells were in there, but they weren't the same brand and one was clearly an old spare he'd had sitting in a drawer. Swapped both for a matched pair, tested range. The passive entry came back. But the car still wouldn't start. The immobilizer hadn't re-recognized the key.
That's the piece people don't know: on this Explorer, a disruption in the key communication during certain conditions can drop the pairing. The fob being physically fine doesn't mean the vehicle still recognizes it. I plugged into the OBD port, ran the key registration through my equipment, and brought his original fob back into the system. Then we registered a second key he'd bought online and never had programmed. Both keys tested out across all five buttons and both started the car clean.
He walked out of his 1pm meeting to two working keys. His Explorer never moved from the parking spot. Dealer comparison was an afterthought he brought up, not me. He'd been quoted a number that was a good chunk more, plus the tow to get there, plus the two days they said it would sit. None of that happened.
