2000 GMC Yukon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 GMC Yukon use?

A standard metal key, cut to the vehicle. No fob, no remote, no battery. You put it in the ignition and turn it. That's the whole system for this year. What that means practically: a replacement can be cut by code if the original documentation exists, or decoded directly off the lock or an existing key. No programming appointment, no dealer computer hookup required. A locksmith with the right equipment can do it on site at your location in Shadowridge.

Q: What equipment do you use to make keys for a 2000 GMC Yukon?

For a mechanical key like this, it comes down to decoding and cutting. I carry plug followers and decoder tools to read the lock directly, and a mobile key machine to cut the blade on site. If the original key code is documented somewhere on the vehicle or in the owner's paperwork, that speeds things up. If not, decoding the lock directly gets the same result. No OBD cable, no laptop, no gateway credentials.

Q: Can I just copy my existing key at a hardware store or a kiosk?

You can, but there's a real risk on a truck this age. Hardware store duplicators and self-serve kiosks copy what they see. If your original key is worn, the copy inherits every worn edge. On a 2000 Yukon with a tired ignition cylinder, a key duplicated off a worn original might start the truck fine for a week and then get increasingly unreliable as the tolerances stack up.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes won't come out. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Both, usually. On a 2000 Yukon, the ignition cylinder and the key have been working together for over two decades. The wafers inside the cylinder wear down, and the key itself wears too. When a key starts sticking or hanging up on the way out, it's often a combination of a worn cylinder that's slightly out of spec and a key that's been ground down just enough to catch.

2000 GMC Yukon Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A landscaping crew boss out in Shadowridge called me about two 2000 GMC Yukons his crew was running. Both company trucks, both on the same yard every morning, and the whole operation was sharing one key between them. One truck sat idle whenever the other driver had it. He said he was losing real labor hours every week over something that should have been a non-issue.

He'd already called the dealer. They quoted him a price per key, told him to bring each truck in on separate days, and made it sound like a production. Two separate trips, two separate days, crew members pulling off jobs to babysit trucks at a service counter.

I drove to his yard one morning. These are mechanical keys, no programming, no module communication, no fob pairing. The job is cutting a key that fits the lock. I decoded both trucks, cut replacement blades on site, tested each key in the ignition and both door locks, and moved on to the second truck while he was on the phone.

Done before the crew left for their first job of the day. He didn't lose a single hour. The dealer comparison wasn't even the point for him. It was the two-separate-trips part that he kept coming back to.

GMC Yukon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things stand out fast. If they won't give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that's a problem. If you search their business name and find no real address, no consistent reviews, just a generic "24/7 emergency" header with a phone number, move on. For a 2000 GMC Yukon specifically, the job is mechanical. A legitimate locksmith should tell you that upfront without hesitation.
