I lost all my keys to my 2009 GMC Yukon. Can you still make one?

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get for this generation of GM trucks. All-keys-lost means the vehicle security system has no registered keys in memory, so it has to be reset and at least one new key has to be enrolled from scratch.

On this truck the relearn process involves a timed security cycle. The first key goes in, you wait through the cycle until the security indicator on the dash goes out, and then the key is accepted. Once that first key is enrolled, adding a second one is fast. The whole job runs about 30 to 45 minutes on site.

Does a 2009 Yukon with no keys have to be towed to the dealer?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment handles this at your location. Dealers tell you to tow because they need the vehicle in their bay to do the work. I don't.

The 2009 Yukon is not a restricted platform. It does not require factory-level dealer credentials or secure remote access to program a key. The procedure is done with a capable scan tool and a properly cut, properly chipped key blank. I've done these in driveways, parking lots, and on the street.

The only time I'd tell someone upfront that the situation is more complicated is if there's an underlying immobilizer fault or damaged ignition hardware involved. But an all-keys-lost on a stock 2009 Yukon in Downtown Ramona is a normal on-site job.

How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 2009 GMC Yukon on site?

If you have one working key: usually 20 to 30 minutes. Cutting the blade and programming the transponder chip are both done at your vehicle.

All-keys-lost takes a bit longer, closer to 30 to 45 minutes, because the security relearn has a timed wait cycle built into it before the first key is accepted. After that first key goes through, adding a second key is quick.

Either way, you're not leaving your truck somewhere overnight.

The security light stays on after I start my 2009 Yukon. Is something wrong with my key?

A security light that stays on after the engine starts is worth paying attention to on this truck. Under normal operation the light comes on briefly when you turn the key, then goes out once the immobilizer recognizes the chip. If it stays lit while the engine is running, the system is telling you something didn't go right.

A few possibilities: the transponder chip in the key is damaged or worn out, the key was cut slightly off and the ignition cylinder is reading it as stress rather than a clean turn, or there's an underlying fault in the vehicle security system that has nothing to do with the key at all.

The classic symptom of a chip that isn't being read is the engine cranking and starting, then dying within a couple of seconds. If yours is running fine but the light is just on, that points more toward a stored fault in the system than a bad key. Either way, I can read what the security system is seeing when I'm on site and tell you exactly where the problem is before any parts get ordered.

Can I buy a transponder key blank online and have someone else cut and program it?

You can, but there are a few things worth knowing before you go that route.

The transponder chip inside the key head has to be the correct type for the 2009 Yukon's immobilizer. Not every blank sold online as a GM-compatible key actually carries the right chip, even if the blade profile looks identical. I've seen blanks arrive with chips that throw errors during programming, or housings so thin the key head cracks within a few weeks of normal use.

If you already bought a blank and want me to cut and program it, I'm happy to test the chip first. If it reads correctly for this application, we move forward. If it doesn't, I have the right blank in the van and we use that instead. Either way you're not stuck.
