2007 GMC Yukon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2007 GMC Yukon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She called me from The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe on a weeknight. Her 2007 GMC Yukon had been sitting in the driveway all day and now it would not start.

She said it cranked fine but kept dying after about two seconds. She had tried both keys, same result on both. Her husband had already called the dealer, and they told her to have it towed in the following morning.

I pulled up to the house and she walked me to the truck. I turned the key, listened to it catch and cut out, and I already had a theory before I opened my bag.

The first thing I checked was the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. On these mid-2000s GM full-size trucks, that ring takes a beating over the years. It sits right where knees bump it, where key chains swing, where things get pulled in and out of the ignition dozens of times a week. This one had a small crack in the housing and one of the connector pins had worked itself loose. The immobilizer was getting an intermittent read on the transponder chip, enough to allow a crank but not enough to hold the start.

I repaired the connection on site. No new key needed, no programming, no tow. She turned the key and it ran like nothing had ever happened.

She mentioned the dealer had already estimated a diagnostic fee plus a tow, and we were done before that conversation would have even started. The truck hadn't changed. The key hadn't changed. It was a connector that cost nothing to fix once you knew where to look.
