I got a call out to the Border Area in San Ysidro from a vet tech at an animal clinic. She had a dog that needed to get to an appointment across town and her 2004 GMC Yukon remote had stopped responding. The key would still turn in the ignition, so she could drive, but the remote was completely dead and she was flustered trying to manage a sick animal and a non-working fob at the same time.
I was there in about 35 minutes.
First thing I did was pull the fob open and check the CR2032. It was original. Not low, not marginal. Depleted. These remotes sit in a pocket or cupholder for years and nobody thinks about the battery until the whole thing stops. Swapped the cell, tested range from across the parking lot. Nothing. The fob itself had given out.
I programmed a replacement remote on site using the OBD port. On these early-2000s GM trucks the programming sequence involves a timed security access window, so there is a wait built in. I used that time to verify the door lock and unlock functions were responding through the body control module and that the receiver was seeing the signal. Once the sequence completed and the new fob was enrolled, everything worked. Lock, unlock, panic, all three buttons confirmed.
She got on the road with time to spare. The dealer would have had her waiting days for an appointment and paying a lot more. The dog stayed in the back seat the whole time and never knew any of it happened.
