My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken key fragment from a GM ignition cylinder without pulling the whole column apart. Once it's out, I assess the cylinder. If it's worn but still functional, I cut a new key to the vehicle and program it on the spot. If the cylinder itself is damaged, that's a separate conversation, but extraction alone often gets you going without a full ignition replacement. The 2020 Yukon's ignition cylinder isn't going to cooperate with improvised tools, so don't go at it with pliers.

What exactly is a smart key and what makes it different from a regular key?

Your 2020 Yukon's smart key is doing three jobs at once. The key blade is there as a backup, the transponder chip inside communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the engine, and the six-button remote handles your locks and other functions wirelessly. All three have to work for the full system to behave normally.

The practical difference from an older key: you can't just cut a new blade at a hardware store and call it done. The electronic side has to be registered to your specific vehicle using diagnostic equipment. The flip side is that if the blade breaks but the electronics inside are still intact, I can often move the internals into a new shell instead of starting from scratch on a full replacement.

My GMC shows a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. A cell that reads low but not dead can produce exactly this symptom, and it's the most common cause by a wide margin. When you swap it, press the battery down firmly and confirm the contacts aren't slightly bent from a previous battery swap.

If the warning persists with a fresh battery, try holding the fob directly against the start button area while pressing the brake. That bypasses the wireless antenna and lets the vehicle read the transponder at close range. Owners on full-size GM truck forums report this trick gets them home when the fob's wireless side is acting up.

A warning that keeps coming back even with a good battery and no improvement at the button usually points to something deeper: an antenna issue, a fob that needs re-registration, or in rarer cases a fault in the immobilizer system itself. That's when you call me. I can diagnose on site and tell you whether it's the fob, the antenna, or something in the vehicle before you start replacing parts blind.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You'll need a tech. The 2020 Yukon smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence the way some older GM vehicles with bladed ignition keys did. Registering a new fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that gets a new smart fob enrolled on this system.

The fob you bought online isn't useless, but it's also not going anywhere without the programming step. If it carries the correct factory FCC ID for your Yukon, I can register it on site. Bring it with you or have it ready when I arrive.

Question 5

One of my door handles stopped triggering the passive unlock. The fob and start button still work fine. Is the key going bad?

Probably not the key. If the fob works at range, the start button sees it, and only one door handle has gone unresponsive, the key is almost certainly fine. The passive unlock on these uses sensors in the door handles, and those are separate from the fob itself. A dirty or corroded handle sensor, a wiring issue at that door, or a fault in the body control module for that specific door circuit are all more likely suspects than a failing smart key.

Wipe the handle area down and retest. If it stays isolated to one door, you're dealing with a door-side issue. That's outside my lane as a key guy, but at least you know you're not chasing a phantom key problem.
