My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken key from a GM ignition cylinder without yanking or damaging it. Once it's out, I can cut a new transponder key from the extracted piece or decode the lock directly and cut from that.

One thing worth knowing on the 2011 Yukon: these trucks have enough miles on a lot of them now that the ignition wafer stack can be worn. If the key snapped because turning it took real force, extraction might reveal a cylinder that needs attention too. I'll tell you what I see on site before any additional work happens.

What exactly is a transponder key, and why can't I just get a copy made at a hardware store?

A transponder key has two jobs at once. The blade operates the ignition cylinder mechanically, the same as any key. But inside the plastic head there's a small chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the key. If the immobilizer doesn't get the right signal from that chip, the engine either won't start or it starts and dies within a second or two.

A hardware store can cut the blade. They cannot program the chip. You'd have a key that physically turns but does nothing. That's the part that requires a locksmith or a dealer with the right equipment.

Question 3

My GMC Yukon cranks but won't fully start, or it starts and immediately stalls. Is that a key problem?

That pattern, cranks over but dies right away, points strongly to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip. On the 2011 Yukon, when the vehicle's security system doesn't get a valid signal from the key, it allows a brief crank cycle and then cuts fuel or spark to kill the engine. Owners on GM forums describe it as the truck "trying to start but giving up immediately," sometimes with a security warning light on the dash.

A few things can cause this: a chip that's been damaged, a key that was never properly programmed to the vehicle, or an immobilizer antenna that's gone bad at the ignition collar. If a fresh cut and programmed key doesn't solve it, the antenna ring around the cylinder is the next thing to check. I can diagnose both on site.

I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can I program it myself, or do I need someone with equipment?

The 2011 Yukon has an onboard add-a-key procedure, but it only works if you already have two working, programmed keys in hand. If you have two good keys, there's an ignition-cycling sequence that can enroll a third without any external tool. Look that up in the owner's manual or a GM forum for the exact steps, it's legitimate.

If you're starting from scratch, have only one key, or have zero working keys, you need programming equipment. The onboard method won't run without two valid keys present first. Bring the key you bought online and I can cut the blade and program the chip on site.

How long does a Yukon transponder key replacement actually take at the vehicle?

Typically 20 to 30 minutes for a single key when I have the right blank on the truck. The programming sequence on this generation of GM trucks is not lengthy. Cut the blade, run the immobilizer enrollment, test start the vehicle, verify it holds. All-keys-lost, where there are no working keys at all, adds time because of the way the security system has to be handled, but it's still a same-day job done at your location in Richland or wherever the vehicle is parked in San Marcos.
