She was closing up at a brewery in South Poway after a bartending shift and her purse was gone. Someone had taken it from behind the bar during the rush. Car keys, wallet, phone, everything. She borrowed a coworker's phone and called the police first, then her roommate, then me.
Her 2022 GMC Yukon was sitting in the brewery lot with no keys at all. When her roommate called the dealer, they quoted a multi-day wait, said the Yukon would need to be towed in, and recommended a full rekey on top of the replacement since the stolen fob could still unlock the doors. I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, accessed the body control module, wiped the existing key data, and programmed two fresh fobs from scratch. The factory fob ID on the original was the same spec as her replacement, the 6-button remote with the CR2450. I also decoded the door lock and cut the emergency blade for both fobs so she had a full mechanical backup. She had both fobs in her hand before the officer finished taking her statement.
She drove home that night. The stolen fob is dead to the car. The dealer estimate, the tow, and the multi-day wait did not happen.
