2003 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the job take once you are at my car?

On a 2003 Sorento with a mechanical key, it moves fast. I decode the existing lock or work from the key code, cut the replacement blade, and test it in the door and ignition. The whole thing usually runs well under 30 minutes at your vehicle. No queue, no repair order, no waiting for a tech to free up between other jobs. You are there, I am there, and we get it done.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Yes, and the gap is bigger than most people expect. The cutting itself is quick either way, but a dealer has to work you into a service queue, write up a repair order, and sometimes source a key blank if they are low on stock. I carry blanks for the 2003 Sorento and come to you. No appointment backlog, no dispatch delay between you and the person doing the actual work. Same result, without the overhead eating your day.

Q: My 2003 Sorento key turns fine in the door but sticks in the ignition. Do I need a new ignition cylinder?

Not necessarily. The door lock and ignition cylinder on these early Sorentos wear at different rates because the ignition gets used every single time you drive, while the door lock might go weeks without the key touching it. A key that still works the door can be worn just enough to bind in the ignition cylinder, especially if the ignition wafers have also worn a little unevenly over two decades.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2003 Sorento. Should I get a spare made now or wait until it fails?

Get the spare made now. A 20-plus-year-old key blade has a lot of miles on it, and getting a duplicate cut while you still have a working original is much simpler than an all-keys-lost job where I have to decode the lock directly. It also costs less. One working key is not a comfortable margin on a daily driver, especially if you are out in Buena Creek and the nearest dealer is not exactly around the corner.

2003 Kia Sorento Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Buena Creek, Vista. He had a 2003 Kia Sorento sitting in his driveway and no working key.

He had one key left, and it had gotten to the point where it would go into the ignition but not turn all the way. He thought he needed a whole new ignition. He had already called a shop down the road that quoted him for a full cylinder replacement.

I drove out and looked at the key first, not the cylinder. The blade was worn down noticeably, especially on two of the cuts. Years of use and a metal keychain with about eight other keys hanging off it. Classic pattern.

I decoded the cuts off the existing key and the lock itself, cross-referenced them, and cut a fresh key on site. Slid it in, turned clean on the first try. The cylinder was fine. It had just been working with a degraded key for so long that it felt like the cylinder was the problem.

He had been one appointment away from paying for parts and labor on a repair that wasn't needed. The key was the whole job.

Dealer comparison didn't even come up. He just appreciated that I was there the same morning he called and that he didn't have to tow the car anywhere.

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Kia key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Most Kia dealer service departments are closed by early evening on weekdays and shut down entirely on Sundays. If you lose your key on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon out in Buena Creek, you are looking at at least a day or two before anyone at the dealer can help, and that assumes they can get you in quickly once they reopen. We work outside those hours.
