A guy out in Bonsall called me on a Tuesday morning. He had both fobs for his 2018 Kia Sorento, neither one was doing anything useful. The car would not respond to lock or unlock from outside, and when he got in and pressed the start button, the dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right on the center console. He had already swapped the battery in one of them. Figured the second one was just old.
When I got there, he handed me both fobs. I checked the first one and the fresh battery was in loose, contact plate slightly bowed from what looked like a drop at some point. That happens more than people expect. Fixed the contact, seated the CR2032 correctly, and the car saw it immediately.
Second fob had a cracked inner housing where the battery compartment meets the board. The board itself was fine, so I transferred it into a new shell on the spot. Tested every button on both units, confirmed the start function on each, walked the door handles to verify the passive entry was reading both fobs properly. Everything came back solid.
He asked if he should go to the dealer to get them re-registered since we had opened them. I told him no, swapping a shell does not wipe a paired fob and neither does a battery pull on this system. He was good to go in about 40 minutes. The dealer route on something like this would have meant leaving the car, waiting on parts, and paying for diagnostic time they were going to charge regardless of the outcome.
