I was parked near the Naval Base Area in Coronado, finishing up notes from an earlier call, when a job came in from a few streets over.

A guy had walked out of his place, hit the unlock button on his 2013 Sorento fob, and nothing happened. He tried again. Still nothing. He used the backup blade to get in, got the car started by holding the fob to the start button area, and called me while sitting in the driveway wondering what was going on.

When I pulled up, he was holding the fob out to me like it had personally offended him.

I asked the obvious question first: when did he last change the battery. He said he had, maybe two weeks ago. I opened the fob right there on the hood. The CR2032 was in upside down. Positive side down, negative side up. A totally easy mistake because the cover goes back on either way and nothing tells you it's wrong until the fob stops working.

Flipped it, snapped it closed, walked all four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, the whole sequence. Everything came back. The key-not-detected warning on the dash cleared as soon as the system saw a properly powered fob again.

He laughed a little. I didn't make him feel bad about it. Happens constantly with this battery type. I told him the backup-hold-to-start trick in case he's ever stranded with a dead cell before he can swap it, and that was that.

Some jobs are quick. This one was quick. But he knows his system now, and that's worth something.
